It's a bit short, but I quickly finished typing the end of the first part. Might be an error or three:
First Lily, then Ben, Myer Anne, Jody, and I all filed out of the safe closet slowly.
The first thing I noticed after spending almost an hour in a large closet was that the hall was less stuffy. The close second thing I felt was wave after wave of an unpleasant, terrible stench. The smell of dead things. Like an open grave with a decaying corpse inside. There had definitely been a struggle. But would we be able to stumble upon anyone around here? Diseased or not, the hall was devoid of movement.
We had all come out the door into a dark hallway with no lights on (why?), a few other doors open, and a few bodies lying on the ground farther down. The door nearer to us that led outside was blocked by a large corpse, and no one would want to get near that at all. The door was shut behind us. We had our destination near; just go and get out.
Myer Anne gasped, “Oh my god…”
“Shh,” urged Ben. I could see him struggling not to look closely at the bodies down the hall.
Lily began moving through the hall to the right, us supposed to follow. Almost like a guide. This led away from the large corpse and the closest door and to the main hall that cuts through the school in the middle (with the cafeteria and the gym).
I walked with Ben beside me, Jody and Myer behind us. We moved as a group of five, down a hall that seemed longer than usual. Still no calls or screams… our fear racing, nevertheless. A real, hammering fear.
A sudden thump noise made all of us jump and look around frantically. What was that?!
We had all heard it and just stood there on edge. But when nothing else happened, Lily gestured for us to move on. Whatever it was, it could have been nothing. Could.
We passed three bodies, one laid out in the middle of the floor that we had to practically step over. They all seemed…rather red. Fresh. But definitely dead. None of them I had known or bothered to know. I didn’t look at them too much.
We came to the main hall, Lily first, still mostly silent. The entire, large corridor that ran from one end of the school to the other was mostly empty. There were a few corpses. And I could see the two sets of double doors beyond the cafeteria had broken glass and were slightly open. But here we were, right at the double doors that led out into the huge school lawn, track, and unused basketball court. Close to out. Close to home free.
Lily looked out through the door windows first, just to make sure of our safety. To give the all clear. But as she peered through the glass, her face that had shown clear gladness at getting out of the woods safely fell into an expression of complete despair. The rest of us came up behind her and looked at what she was seeing. It was not the sprawling field of OMS, neatly mowed and open.
What we saw was that gigantic lawn, swarming with crowds of people. People with a noticeable stumble and limp to their steps. People with unnaturally glowing eyes, a crimson hue that shown under the late afternoon sun. People that groaned and cried out to each other in that different voice. People I had known from around the school and around the area, but did not know at all now. Definitely did not know. It was an unbelievable, horrifying sight to see dozens and even hundreds of them, all milling around the building out there. Every one of them meant danger.
We stood, unseen from our position at the doors. Watched them.
“We’re trapped,” Ben spoke hoarsely. I think that was the smartest thing I’d ever heard from him.
