Here are some notes.
History of the Great Collapse and World Resource War:
As the United States began to subside into an increasingly unstable and indebted state in the 2020’s, the country became more and more susceptible to previously petty problems. Ultimately however, it was the exponential increase in population of American cities that caused the Great Collapse. To secure economic stability in a failing superpower, the US oversaw the formation of new business conglomerates, which later became known as the factions. These economic parties were tasked with grand reorganization and reformation of their key industries and to above all keep up positive and reassuring fronts to the masses. In the face of the fearful media, these parties sought support and respect above actual reform, garnering respect from graciously giving out rations of their industries’ resources (to further reassure the public of their ‘prosperity’).
Soon enough, factions went from business leaders to aristocrats, and the race to lock down resources and power ensued. In return for their goods and/or promises of goods, factions began somewhat secretly requesting direct assistance from the people. The factions gave out much needed jobs to those willing to arm themselves in those factions’ names. These jobs were mostly just over glorified security forces. Faction patriotism became more important to the masses than unification.
In 2030, the single greatest famine struck the drying plains and farm fields of North America which sent the country into an avalanching panic. As fear of running fresh out of food struck the people, each faction had to prove their capability. Most factions invaded the dwindling food industry to feed and reassure their armed soldiers, and all out revolt became a reality.
Almost overnight, factions tested out their newfound members’ loyalties and attempted to occupy entire cities and states. Some proved powerful and well organized enough to do so, and still others that lacked the initial force to expand aligned themselves with other factions (long term alliances were rare however). They simply took as needed.
Of course, central gov’t soldiers were employed to attempt to stop the primitive civil war, though as time wore on, their efforts to restore peace proved mostly fruitless. Most gov’t soldiers eventually died off or deserted their commanders under the intense rejection of the factions and revolting civilians.
By early 2031, the US declared national anarchy, and many other population bloated countries worldwide were negatively impacted by the loss of one of their biggest food suppliers in the world. No lasting efforts to regain control were able to be made by other countries, and conditions worsened worldwide. As other countries formed similar conflicts and collapses, they were collectively called the World Resource War.
Back at the Homefront, the casualties and atrocities continued to mount. Detention camps formed, where entire populations of civilians were held and often forced to do labor under terrible conditions (such as farming the dying fields, which led to the term Blood Fields in reference to the Great Plains). Child soldiers became a thing in America. Atrocities like raiding, raping, and mass murdering neutral citizens and enemy faction sympathizers progressed throughout 2031.
Mute begins in late August 2031.
Characters in Mute A:
Ryker Sunderland – age: 17 (as of August 2031)
Ryker Sunderland was born in October 23, 2014 into a middle class, well to do family in Herrings City, North Carolina. They lived in a house just outside of the city, where the large buildings gave way to suburban developments. Over the years, as the population spiked, the city expanded outward, like almost every other urban community. He was an introverted and clever boy, able to get along (mostly) with his older brother, Leon.
Leon Sunderland – age: 21
Leon was born July 14, 2011. He attended a local city college in Herrings for about 3 years until the Great Collapse. In the commencement of the siege of Herrings, Leon raced home to find his house had been hit by artillery and parents crushed by the half collapsed structure; he was just barely able to drag Ryker out of the house and find refuge at Uncle Jay’s.
Myra Hunnigan – age: 18 aka the Mute
Myra once attended the same high school as Ryder, though neither ever acknowledged each other, or even knew one another, previous to the Great Collapse.
Krauser – age: 32
A religious and militia fanatic that came to power in a pocket of Herrings in early 2031. Sadly, he only showed up for a split second because many of his chapters were fast forwarded through, into Mute B.
Faction list:
Shortly after initial conflict broke out, most factions adopted simpler, more clan like names that reflected their current goals and past industry. For example, the petroleum division of America became known as Black Banner.
Name - Past Industry - Declared Capital; Battlefronts, facts
-Black Banner - Petroleum - Detroit, MI; spread across northeast, best fuel supply
-Red Rebirth - Health Care - Atlanta, GA; spread across the eastern seaboard
-Crimson Crown - Real Estate - Raleigh, NC; Edward Crown leads in central states
-Blue Beacon - Hydroelectricity - Mute Valley, CO; mostly confined to the Rocky Mnts.
-Silver Supremacy - Electronic Distribution - Salt Lake City, UT; allied with Blue Beacon, best tech
Herrings City Notes:
In fall 2030, The Great Collapse shook the city of Herrings, yet for a while, stability was within reach. While other cities were immediately occupied by factions, put under martial law, and sucked into revolution, Herrings remained mostly neutral and peaceful for the greater part of 2030. Then in December, the city was suddenly claimed by Red Redemption, and the few government soldiers stationed there (as most of the US army was busy elsewhere) either fled or joined them. Any sense of peace didn’t last, however, as the city was soon surrounded by two other main factions, Black Banner and Crimson Crown, both claiming the rich city for themselves. On December 23, heavy artillery bombardment of the city began on all fronts, continuing into the New Year without much success on any one side. The two outside factions then resorted to a more patient, siege-like approach to the capturing of Herrings. No one, civilian or soldier, and no supplies were let in or out. Much of early 2031 fighting in Herrings resembled the Siege of Serenjavo in the Bosnian War, that is, until the conflict became more spread out and Black Banner soldiers decided to invade the city in late March. Although Black Banner and other minor factions managed to grab footholds in the city, a series of stalemates led to ‘patchwork’ warfare throughout Herrings. By this point, all business and real commerce permanently stalled due to the anarchy, and through the summer, the civilian population suffered the most of any group. Whatever the factions didn’t take, the gangs that sprung out of the woodwork did. Bitter hubris and dark patriotism fueled the constant warfare between the factions, each claiming the megacity, which was slowly burning away.
