I'm at a lack of inspiration for this story. i'm on a flash fiction high right now. "What Does The Fox Say" is not really the most inspiring song- credits to Spotify. I'm just gonna whip something out and see how it turns out. I can edit later.
The drive home was quiet, and slightly nerve racking. mom was on edge, the slightest noise would cause her to twitch suddenly, resulting in the car swerving. Her hands gripped the wheel so tight her knuckles were white. I let her go, not wanting to push her to the edge. I was afraid I might add something onto her heavy plate. The sky had an eerie green hue to it. I had no explanation to why this was happening, and it made me think if there was a such thing as God. I can't say I had any real religion. I didn't exactly believe in God, but I didn't not believe in God. You average American teen. Objects still hovered in mid air, unreachable by most citizens. when we reached our house, mom ushered me inside quickly, turning on the news.
"... freak storms around the world, killing millions of people, out of the blue...." The faint words of the news lingered in the house, a feeling of unease filling the bare halls of my house. Tanner ran to Mom when she came home, his eyes big with fear. The Babysitter, Alysha took tentative steps towards us, clutching her valuables to her chest. Most let go of Tanner, and handed Alysha her pay.
"Go home sweetie, check on your parents. Be careful out there." Alysha hurried from our home, rushing to her car. Mom didn't stand and watch her leave like she usually did. "Felicity, Call dad. Please, make sure he's okay." I quickly obeyed my mother, knowing her stress level was beyond normal. I dialed dad's number, and waited to here his usual cheerful voice.
"Felicity? what's going on? are you and your mother alright?" My dad answered on the first ring.
"Yes, we are at home with Tanner. Are you coming home?"
"I can't leave. The police are keeping us here, they don't know whats going on out there. I'll e home by tonight. It'll blow over." he said quickly.
"I don't know,"I said unsure of my answer. I looked outside, the wind had begun to pick up. Several objects were still suspended in air, not moving. I looked back into the kitchen, dirty dishes hanging in the air, dripping soapy water on the floor. My mother must have been doing to the dishes when she came to pick me up.
"Listen, don't worry about me. I'll be fine, call me in a few hours just to check in," dad said.
"Alright, I will."
"I love you. Be safe."
"I love you too dad. Bye." My dad hung up, the phone going dead. Mom looked at me, waiting for an update on dad.
"He can't come home, the police won't let them. He said he should be home sometime tonight." I told her. Her forehead was lined with creases of worry, aging her significantly. Tanner looked up at her, drool dribbling from his mouth.
"Where daddy?" Tanner asked, his mouth filling with drool.
"Daddy's alright. Felicity, feed your brother. I have to make a few calls." Tanner came to me, lifting his hands, a gesture of him wanting to be picked up. Tanner was four, and quite heavy for his age. He was a thin boy, but he had alot of mass. His dirty blond hair came from his father, his green eyes from his mother. Tanner's tongue glossed over his front teeth, slipping through the holes of his missing teeth. I set him down in his high chair, grabbing his food from the refrigerator. Tanner giggled, reaching for floating forks and spoons. His tiny hand touched the tip of a fork, but could not grasp it, his arm too short.
I was careful where I placed my feet, the floor covered in dirty soap water. Tanner reached for his food, Cheerios, and applesauce. I opened the containers of food, handing them to Tanner. He placed his hand in his applesauce, sucking on his fingers, smearing applesauce on his face. He then grabbed Cheerios and shoved them in his mouth, applesauce spilling from his mouth. A faint sound of thunder echoed through the house, causing Tanner to stop eating.
"Was dat?" Tanner asked, looking at me, his green eyes wide once again.
"Nothing, Tanner. Everything will be alright." I said and spooned some applesauce into his open mouth. The lights in the house flickered, causing Tanner to cry out. I picked hi up, his applesauce covered hands clutched at my shirt, looking for comfort. Felicity looked for her mother, calling for her over the sound of the rising wind.
This will probably escalate quickly, Blow Away is a very good song for this story
Tanner began to cry, he was scared. Her mother met her in the middle of the hallway leading to the door. Unexpectedly, the door floor open, the wind was so strong. Tanner screamed, and mom rushed to shut the door. Torments of rain poured down from the sky. Lightning cracked overhead, followed by rolls of thunder. I pulled Tanner closer to me, covering his exposed ear. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end at the sound of thunder followed by a breaking window.
