I hate school. This is something you probably already know, but I'll say it again. It's not the environment that I hate its the stupid lessons we learn. When am I ever going to need to know how to simplify a square root without a calculator? That's what phones are for. Why must I know where George Washington went to college? He's dead anyway, it doesn't really mater now. This last stretch is hard. Senior year is supposed to be easy and quick, truthfully it's not.
I should be able to drop out of High School. I already know where I am going to college anyway. I already know what job I want to pursue when I finished college, so keeping me in this prison is doing nothing for me. But none of my teachers agree with me, obviously. I wouldn't be here if they did agree with me. School is a bore, which doesn't help my boring life. I have nothing to do,all of my friends are busy with their boyfriends(per usual) and homework is not exciting. I have nothing to do, and no place to go, so it looks like I'll be spending another day at the house, again. Not to be negative but today doesn't seem to have a redeeming factor in itself to make this day exciting.
I looked up at the clock, it read 1:11. with a sigh, I put my pen down and closed my journal. I stared at my open Science book, knowing I should be studying. I switched my journal for my school notebook, and reached for my pen. My hand grasped air, and I looked up confused. I must have dropped it, I thought to myself. I looked under the table expecting to see my pen, which was not there. I looked around the table I was at but my pen wasn't there either. In a last resort, I looked up expecting to see nothing. But my pen was suspended in mid-air above me. I looked around seeing various lightweight objects hanging above their possessors. Confused whispers filled the once quiet library, and I reached up to grab my pen, my fingers grasping the round body. AS my finger closed around the smooth tube, a single droplet hit my skin. More droplets of water followed, slowly coming down harder. Quickly, I closed my books, shoving them in my backpack. It had begun to rain, inside the school, the librarian ushered us out of the library, telling us to find a safe place.
"Students please remain calm, all students will be sent home at this time." The principal said through the intercom. I followed the steady stream of students exiting the building.
"Felicity!" I turned at the sound of my name. "Felicity!" my friends Mira called. She quickly jogged to my side. "Do you know whats going on?" She asked, brushing her straight black hair from her face. I shook my head not sure what to say. "This is really weird," she said, wiping water from her eyes. Mira's water bottle floated beside her, and she quickly reached out and grabbed it. Several objects hung in the air, and I had to doge a few wandering pencils as she walked. I did have to agree with Mira, this was really weird. I had never experienced something like this before. Once we were outside, the cool breeze was cold against my skin. I looked back, the rain still coming from the ceiling of the school. I shook my head, wondering what was happening. Gravity had not yet returned to normal, and the pull on surfaced objects seemed a bit greater. My water bottle floated from my back pack pocket several times, causing me to hold it in my hand. Mira waved and jogged to her mother's car, who was a teacher at the High School. Pulling out my phone, I called my mom.
"Hi honey, aren't you in school?" My other asked in a cheery voice.
"Well, not exactly," I replied.
"Well, what's wrong?"
"It was raining inside the school, and we got sent home."
"It was raining? Inside the school?"
"You probably don't believe me, but I'm not lying."
"Okay, well you wait at the school, I'll come pick you up."
"Mom, I can walk home, it's not-"
"No, just wait there, I'll come get you,"my mother ordered, and hung up. I put my phone away, knowing there was not point in arguing with her. I looked back at the school, police men and fire fighters swarming the entrance. Teachers stood outside, trying to get a good look at what was going on inside. I sat down at a bench in front of the school, and waited for my mother. I looked at my watch, surprised to see that only ten minutes had passed. It was 1:21. the sound of tires caused me to look up from my watch, to see the news team pull in. Cameramen and news anchors rushed from the van to get the scoop on what had happened. I looked down, minding my own business.
"Excuse me miss, can I speak with you?" I looked up to see the CBS news anchor, Ryan Sewald. I nodded, standing up. "Good, I'll ask you a few questions, and just look at me, ignore the camera," he said. I nodded, wondering why he hadn't asked for my parents permission. "Miss, what is you name?"
"Felicity Saussure," I replied quickly. Ryan nodded, giving the camera man the signal to roll the camera.
"Here we have a High School student, a first-hand witness of this rare occasion. Miss Saussure, what can you tell us. What exactly happened?"
"Well, it'll probably sound pretty unrealistic, but here's what happened. Gravity seemed to almost turn off, things were suspended in mid-air, calculators, pencils, paper. And then it began to rain, softly at first and it got harder as it continued. It wasn't anything thing super exciting, that's all that happened." I answered, hoping he would believe me.
"Were you scared at all?" I shook my head quickly.
"Do you think there is some higher power at work? Or is it just the elements of the universe acting up?"
"I don't know. I can't tell you I understand what's going on? I'm not a scientist, I don't understand how things work. I don't know whats going on. I'm just a kid." I said, as my mother pulled up beside me. "I have to go, my mothers here," I said softly, grabbing my bag. My mother ushered me inside the car, and got out when I got in. I didn't close my door, wanting to hear what she was saying.
"Excuse me Mr. Sewald, but you have no right to interview my daughter without my permission. She is only 18, she's not an adult. You should have asked for her parents before you put her on live TV." My mother said softly, and got in the car. Se drove off without another word.
"Mom, I'm sorry, I should have-"
"It's not your fault, he should have asked for parental permission before interviewing you. He's supposed to be a professional," she interrupted. My mother turned from the school and stopped abruptly. There was a car accident, bits and pieces of the car hung in mid-air about 15 feet above the accident. My mother looked at the scene before her, with a slightly horrified face. a police officer motioned for her to roll down her window, and he leaned over to speak with her.
"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to take a detour and return home. It is not safe to be outside. Until further notice, we are asking that everyone stays inside." the officer said.
"Officer, do you know what's going on?" My mother asked, her voice cracking. He shook his head, taking off his cap. I ran his hand through hs hair and placed his cap back on.
"Only God knows."
