The next part:
We had no time to run or hide. Suddenly, a ghastly figure appeared from behind the corner. Stumbling into our view, its glowing eyes spotted us. Tattered clothing and deep wounds set in its dead looking skin was clearly visible all over its body. The two eyes widened. Its moaning began to grow louder and raspier. A lust in its voice that was nothing but evil. I was sure of this.
“Stay together. We have to kill it,” Colton whispered, not taking his eyes off it. Some of us were rooted to the spot. Others quickly ran. They fled in sheer terror of the thing barely 20 feet away, moving towards us in an accelerating stumble.
“Stop, please stop!” Myer Anne cried. Most members of our even smaller group began backing away, inching back, mass hysteria taking hold. And the thing still came closer!
Next thing I saw was Brendan, who was near the front, charge towards it. A rush of quick adrenaline or fear or something sent him practically straight into it. A sturdy table leg grasped in both of his hands.
So fast. Brendan’s table leg swung around and connected with the tall thing’s neck before it could reach out for him. Brendan gave that swing all the force he had in him. It stumbled back a bit, remaining upright. Josh ran forward. Then more of us came behind. To help.
I guess the next thing that happened was that it was brought down to the ground. Somebody must’ve been able to get it down before it regained its full composure. Cries. A short scuffle. Keeping it down on the floor by pounding it with various makeshift weapons. Pounding the writhing, snarling creature. People jumped around the body in order to avoid being swiped by one of its swinging limbs. Looked like some sick dance. Josh finally shoved a pair of long scissors up into its head through below the chin. Blood stemmed up from the long, clean gash. It gasped out a loud, deathly sound before it twitched violently several times on the ground and then lay still.
Slowly, the pounding on the thing stopped as everyone realized it was dead. It was over. The twin, paper cutting blades were stuck in its neck and Josh didn’t try to pick them back up.
The ones who had run away down the Harrier Hawk Hall (the one with the janitor closet) during the fight came back as well. I didn’t blame those that ran away during the fight: Brody, Ryan, Kayla and Ben. In short, it had been scary for all of us. We were breathing heavy from the intensity of killing only a single ‘zombie’. One less infected (as Ben called it before) in the school now.
“Is everyone okay?” Ben asked after a bit.
There wasn’t a single answer to that, but it was found that no one had been scratched or bitten in the struggle. That was the important thing, and by now, we knew this was a fact. We’d all seen it, and no one needed to be told that being wounded by one of the infected was very bad.
Simply, very bad.
As we began to move back into our formless crowd, Colton spoke again.
“I’m going to the front office to see if we can call anyone, namely the police,” he said quickly and sure of himself. “If anyone will come with me just in case, please do. But the rest of you, if you can wait someplace, that would be good too.”
A few kids dispatched from the rest of us to follow him as he walked away, around the corner the zombie had just come, to the front office. Somehow, Colton surprised me with his sheer ability to hold his head together so well. He didn’t appear scared much. The rest of us, pretty much yes.
Soon, our small crowd began talking again.
“What do we do now? Wait here?”
“I know sure as hell I’m not waiting here for another one to pop out of nowhere. I’m going back to the 8th grade lab as soon as possible, where it’s safe.”
“Is it safe for Colton to just do that? Walk farther into the school?”
“There’s probably more around this place. We should go after him. Turn back on the power, wherever it was shut off.”
Still a lot of confusion and conflict.
I think Brody and Ryan branched off from the rest of us to go back to a room or someplace ‘safe.’ People began meandering around the hall a bit.
It was still dangerous, wasn’t it? Then why were we breaking down into smaller groups? Others were still confused and unsure of what to do.
“Guys, we need to stay together,” I called out to a few of them, going down the hall, past the vending machine.
“And I need to see if others are alive down here,” Ben called over his shoulder as he walked.
Dangerously dispersing. But some preferred to stay with the largest cluster of kids which numbered around 7 now.
“Listen! If you hear something, call the rest of us over,” Lily said. And it wasn’t long at all before something was heard.
A man’s shout, followed by several more teenager cries echoed down the corridors. But not from any of our own people. Someone else was yelling hysterically, far away, followed by several infected roars, their already familiar, terrible sound rising up in a chorus of monstrous victory cries. Where was this coming from?!
